Transformer or insulating oils for X-ray tubes, can be divided into four types.


Vegetable transformer oil.
Biotransformer oil - mix of synthetic esters.
Mineral transformer oil - product of petroleum. The worst option.
Synthetic transformer oil - product of petroleum.
Silicone Transformer Oil - silicon product. Small Breakdown voltage (50 kV).

Vegetable transformer oil is a natural vegetable oil pressed on the press, followed by fine-tuning to standardized characteristics. Neutral to all insulation materials. This is the best option for x-ray tubes.

Biotransformator oil - a mixture of high quality synthetic esters. Neutral to all insulation materials. This is the best option for x-ray tubes.

Mineral transformer oil is rectified oil of the petroleum.

Synthetic transformer oil is a selective oil fraction with additional processing and the addition of chemical additives.

Silicone Transformer Oil (PDMS) is a silicone fluid (silicon + carbon).

All types of transformer oils are standardized and interchangeable if the insulating materials and gaskets are neutral to these types of oils.

Natural and biotransformer oil can replace all types of transformer oils without restrictions. Natural and biotransformer oil is neutral to all rubbers and insulating materials.

When using a different type of oil, rinse the oil system with this oil.

When choosing the type of oil, consider the following parameters:


Natural and bio oil has:
Breakdown voltage (more than 70 kV).
Working temperature (250 - 300 degrees).
Flash point (300 degrees).
Ignition temperature (450 degrees).
Greatest loss tangent is (20).
When recycling can be poured on the ground as fertilizer.

Synthetic oil has:

Breakdown voltage (up to 70 kV).

Silicone oil has:

Working temperature (250 - 300 degrees).
Flash point (300 degrees).

Some insulation materials are not compatible with silicone oil:

Acetylcellulose butyrate.
Polyoxymethylene.
Polyethylene.
Linear polyethylene.
Polyvinylchloride.

The main indicator of quality for transformer oil is the date of manufacture of the oil. The fewer days after production transformer oil, the better the characteristics of the oil.

Vegetable, bio, mineral, synthetic and silicone transformer oil can be used in X-ray tubes.

For example.

If the X-ray machine works very intensively (with a strong X-ray tube heating) or in a very hot climate, then when replacing the X-ray tube, you can pour silicone oil, after washing the system with identical silicone oil. Provided that the insulation materials and gaskets are neutral to silicone.
